Greg's Leucadia bungalow with an existing steel gate in Encinitas had a sound steel swing gate that was opened by hand every day. We re-hung the gate level first, then fitted a 24V DC linear operator with battery backup, monitored photo eyes and two remotes, an opener retrofit on a 12 ft swing gate using a 24V DC operator on an existing gate. The retrofit was an estimated $2,100 to $3,400 and took an estimated 6 to 8 hours in one visit. Greg now gets one-button entry, and the gate stops and reverses the moment the beam is broken.

Swing Operators and Slide Operators

The right operator depends on how the gate moves: swing gates take a linear actuator or an articulated arm, and slide or cantilever gates take a rack-and-pinion drive. Every operator we fit is one of 24V DC brushless continuous-duty motors: linear or articulated arm on swing gates, rack-and-pinion on slide gates, chosen for the gate in front of us rather than a favourite brand.

Operator typeGate it suitsWhat to know
Linear actuatorSwing gates with room behind the postClean look, needs a straight push angle
Articulated armSwing gates on wide pillars or stone postsFolds behind a pillar, as on many Rancho Santa Fe entries
Rack-and-pinionSlide and cantilever gatesGear rack on the gate, motor on a pad beside the drive

On a sloped Elfin Forest or Bonsall drive, the gate shape usually decides the operator before we do.

Sizing the Operator to the Gate

An operator is sized by the gate's weight, its length and how many times a day it cycles, not by the price of the motor. A 16 ft ranch-style drive gate needs more torque than a 12 ft swing gate, and a steel leaf weighs far more than the same leaf in powder-coated aluminum.

Cycles matter as much as weight: a home gate in Lake San Marcos might open a dozen times a day, while a shared drive or a busy household in Poway runs far more, which is where a continuous-duty motor earns its keep.

Older Gates Need Hinge and Frame Work First

Many existing gates have to be fixed before they can be automated, because a motor pushing a sagging or binding leaf burns out early and trips its own safety reversal. We check the hinge posts for plumb, the hinges for wear and the frame for twist, and we re-hang the leaf before any operator goes on.

Hinges are upgraded to ball-bearing barrel or greaseable weld-on hinges rated for 500 to 1,500 lbs per pair where the old ones have worn. A gate that cannot be made true is better replaced, and our custom driveway gate fabrication shop builds it to suit the operator.

Gate Safety: Photo Eyes, Edges and UL 325

Every gate we automate meets UL 325 and ASTM F2200: monitored photo eyes (Type B1) plus safety edges (Type B2) on every automated gate. UL 325, in its seventh edition since 2018, calls for two independent means of entrapment protection in each direction of travel where a person could be caught, and the external sensors must be monitored, so the operator stops if one fails.

  • Type A and B1: the operator's own reversal counts as only one means, so photo eyes across the opening stop and reverse the gate when the beam breaks.
  • Type B2: contact edges on the gate or post that react on touch.
  • ASTM F2200: the construction side, covering slide and swing gates, positive stops and guarded rollers.

Older installs in Fairbanks Ranch and Del Mar often have none of the external devices, which is the single most common gap we find on a retrofit.

Power, Battery Backup and Solar

Most automated gates run on a hardwired 120V feed to a 24V DC operator, with a battery that keeps the gate working when the power drops. Where a trench up a long drive costs too much, as with a 16 ft ranch-style drive gate at the end of a gravel lane, a 10W to 30W solar panel with dual 12V AGM batteries can run a home gate, provided the panel sees the southern sky.

Battery backup is not optional on a fire-season lot: in Bonsall, where the 2017 Lilac Fire burned through, and on chaparral lots in Elfin Forest, we pair the battery with emergency access: Knox key switch, Opticom strobe sensor or siren responder, as the fire district requires.

What Gate Automation Costs in Carlsbad

An opener retrofit on an existing gate in Carlsbad typically runs an estimated $1,800 to $3,800 per operator system, covering the motor, photo eyes, battery backup and remotes. Dual swing gates need two operators, a long power trench adds labor, and solar replaces the trench on rural drives like Brian's 16 ft ranch gate.

Smart entry such as a cellular or Wi-Fi 1080p video intercom, backlit keypad, RFID readers and smartphone app entry is quoted separately, typically an estimated $2,400 to $3,900 for a full video setup. Our deposit never exceeds $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less, under California law.

Automation prices on this page are estimates and remain subject to change. The written quote after our site visit sets the final price and the install schedule, based on the gate's weight, the power run and the safety devices it needs.

Why Owners Trust Our Automation Work

Our gate automation technician runs the entrapment protection test on every automated gate before we hand over the remotes, and our 2-year workmanship warranty on welds, hinge alignment, gate sag and gate travel covers the gate we automate. We work within a 40-mile radius, so a Solana Beach or Poway service call is answered by the crew who installed it.

Gate Materials That Automate Well

Lighter gates are easier on an operator, which is why aluminum coastal gates suit long spans near the beach, while a leaf in galvanized steel, black powder coat, like our ornamental steel fencing and gates, needs a heavier-rated motor.

Gate Automation Service Areas

We automate gates across North County, with steady work in Encinitas beach neighborhoods, inland Poway, rural Bonsall and Harmony Grove, plus the communities on our service area page.

Related Gate Services

Once a gate moves on its own, owners add a gate intercom or keypad entry; on a sloped drive, a heavy-duty trackless cantilever gate from our slide and cantilever gate work is often the gate to automate, and an estate gate entry hides the arms behind its pillars.

Gate Opener Questions From North County Owners

How much does it cost to add an opener to my gate?

An opener retrofit on an existing gate is typically an estimated $1,800 to $3,800 per operator system, and your written quote sets the final price.

How long does an opener install take?

Most retrofits take an estimated 4 to 8 hours on site when the gate already swings true.

Can you automate my existing gate?

Usually yes, once the hinges, posts and frame check out; a twisted or sagging leaf is re-hung or replaced first.

Will my gate open when the power goes out?

Yes, a battery backup keeps the operator running through an outage, and every operator has a manual release.

What safety sensors does an automatic gate need?

UL 325 calls for two independent means of entrapment protection in each direction, so we fit monitored photo eyes and safety edges.

Can a gate opener run on solar?

Yes, a 10W to 30W panel with backup batteries runs many home gates in Elfin Forest and Poway when the panel faces south.

Do I need a permit for a gate opener?

A hardwired operator needs an electrical permit in California, and we pull it for you.

Do you automate gates you did not build?

Yes, many of our retrofits are on gates another company hung, like Greg's in Leucadia.

From Site Measure to the Final Safety Test

  1. Site measure

We measure the opening, the grade and the swing or slide path before anything is drawn.

  2. Drawings and approval

You approve a scaled drawing, the metal, the finish and the operator before steel is cut.

  3. Shop fabrication

The gate is welded in our shop, then galvanized and powder coated for the salt air.

  4. Install and safety test

We set the posts, hang the gate, wire the operator and test every photo eye and safety edge with you.
