Gates That Will Not Rust Within Sight of the Ocean

Our team provides isolation at every joint where two metals meet, delivering salt-proof gates for homes and low-maintenance entries for both residential and commercial projects. Backed by 14 years of coastal work and a 2-year workmanship warranty, we've completed over 1,326 projects, from one bluff-side walk gate to full aluminum fence and gate packages.

From nylon isolators under each stainless bolt to a powder coat baked onto the bare aluminum, our team handles every detail. Serving Carlsbad and neighboring Solana Beach, Encinitas and Del Mar, we build aluminum gates that keep their finish in the salt air near the bluffs.

Paul's narrow coastal lot in Solana Beach now has 70 linear feet of fence with a matching walk gate in powder-coated aluminum, in place of a painted steel fence whose posts had rusted clean through. We recommended powder-coated aluminum fence panels and an aluminum walk gate with stainless fasteners, set on new footings, so nothing on the line can rust. The work on that narrow coastal lot was an estimated $3,200 to $4,900 and took an estimated 2 to 3 days on site. Paul's fence will not rust in the salt air, and it needs only a hose rinse now and then.

Why Aluminum Suits the Coast

Aluminum does not rust, because the metal forms a thin oxide film on its surface that shields it from further corrosion by oxygen and water. Steel has no such film, so a chip in the paint on a Del Mar or Encinitas gate lets salt air reach bare iron and start rust under the coating. A powder coat on aluminum is there for color, not protection, which is why a scratch on an aluminum gate stays a scratch.

Most homes west of Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and the bluff-top lots in Solana Beach, are where we steer owners to aluminum first.

Strength, Span and Weight

Aluminum weighs about one-third as much as steel, so an aluminum gate is easier on hinges and on a gate operator, and an aluminum driveway gate often runs on a lighter motor than the same gate in steel, which also keeps an opener retrofit on an existing gate simple. The trade-off is strength: aluminum has lower impact strength than steel and can bend under a falling branch or a car bumper. We size frames for the span, add a center wheel or a mid-rail on wide gates, and suggest galvanized steel instead where a gate guards a busy street or a sloped drive with trailer traffic, as on horse properties in Bonsall.

Galvanic Corrosion Risk Between Metals

Aluminum corrodes fast where it touches stainless steel or copper in salt water, because aluminum becomes the anode of a small battery and gives itself up to protect the other metal. Salty mist on a Solana Beach gate is enough to complete that circuit. We avoid it by keeping the two metals apart, the same rule we follow on stainless cable railing posts: nylon washers and sleeves under every stainless bolt, isolating pads where an aluminum gate post meets a steel hinge plate, and no copper flashing touching the frame.

  • Fasteners: stainless steel bolts, isolated from the aluminum with nylon washers and sleeves.
  • Hinges: aluminum or isolated stainless hinges, never bare steel against bare aluminum.
  • Posts: aluminum posts set in concrete with a sealed top, so water does not sit inside.
  • Operators: brackets isolated where a steel operator arm meets an aluminum frame.

Aluminum Gate Cost in Carlsbad

Aluminum gate prices here are estimates for Carlsbad and are subject to change. Your written quote after the site visit sets the final price and the install schedule, and it depends on the gate width, the style and whether the gate gets an operator.

Styles That Work in Aluminum

Clean picket, flat-top and horizontal designs work best in aluminum, because extruded profiles weld into crisp, light frames that suit a 2010s master-planned home in Harmony Grove as well as a beach house. Spear tops, arched tops and simple rings suit Spanish Colonial Revival homes in Del Mar, and dark bronze or black powder coat reads like iron from the street. Heavy forged scrolls are the exception: when a design calls for hammered ironwork, steel is the honest choice.

Gate Materials for Coastal Homes

Aluminum, galvanized steel and stainless steel are the three metals we use within a mile or two of the water, and the right one depends on how the gate is used; inland toward Elfin Forest we lean on galvanized steel instead. Estates that want a heavy forged look still choose ornamental iron and steel fencing with full galvanizing. View decks on the same lots usually get 316 stainless cable view railings, which share the coastal hardware rules.

Why Coastal Owners Hire Our Gate Crew

Our crew has built gates on 1,326 projects across 14 years, much of it on the stretch from Carlsbad to Del Mar where salt air ruins painted steel. We isolate every dissimilar metal joint on the bench, before the gate reaches your property. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers welds, hinge alignment, gate sag and gate travel.

Aluminum Gate Service Areas

We build aluminum gates across a 40-mile radius, with most of them close to the water in Solana Beach bluff-top homes, Del Mar near the two lagoons and Leucadia and Cardiff in Encinitas. Inland owners in Rancho Santa Fe, Poway and Lake San Marcos choose aluminum for weight and price, and our service areas page lists every city.

Related Coastal Gate Services

An aluminum driveway gate pairs with gate automation and openers sized for its lighter weight, and a pool on a coastal lot needs code-compliant pool gates and fencing, an estimated $30 to $45 per linear foot in pool code aluminum. Owners after a modern look compare aluminum with horizontal slat gates.

Aluminum Gate Questions From Coastal Homeowners

How much does an aluminum gate cost in Carlsbad?

Aluminum fence and walk gates are estimated at roughly $25 to $75 per linear foot installed, and your written quote sets the final price.

Does aluminum rust near the ocean?

No, aluminum forms a protective oxide film instead of rust, which is why it suits homes near the coast.

Is an aluminum gate strong enough for a driveway?

Yes, for most driveways, as long as the frame is sized for the span and the gate is not exposed to vehicle impact.

Can an aluminum gate be automated?

Yes, and its lighter weight is easier on the operator and the hinges than a steel gate of the same size.

Why do aluminum gates need special hardware?

Aluminum corrodes where it touches stainless steel in salt air unless the two are isolated, so we use nylon washers and sleeves.

How long does an aluminum gate install take?

Most aluminum fence and gate runs take an estimated 2 to 3 days on site.

Can aluminum look like wrought iron?

Yes, a dark powder coat with spear or arched tops reads like iron from the street, at a lighter weight.

How much do you collect up front for an aluminum gate?

Our deposit tops out at $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less, under California law.
